Less heat, fewer crowds and often much more calm: Lake Garda feels different in spring and autumn. The key is choosing a campsite whose opening period and facilities actually match your travel dates.
Use the shoulder season well
For many campers, April, May, September and October are among the most enjoyable months on Lake Garda. The main holiday crowds have either not arrived or have already left, cycle routes and lakeside towns feel more relaxed, and daytime activities are often easier than in midsummer heat. Low season does, however, require more planning: campsites have very different opening dates and not every facility runs from the first operating day to the last.
Your shortlist should therefore start with the actual season rather than the summer facilities. For 2026, our four recommendations cover a period from late March into early November. Camping Brione in Riva del Garda has an especially long season, Piantelle and Europa Silvella combine early opening with direct lake access, and Fornella remains open well into October while adding a heated pool and wellness focus to the camping experience.
Expectations matter too. Travellers who want guaranteed water-park weather and a full entertainment schedule every day will find July and August more predictable. Those who value cycling, hiking, town visits, food and quiet time by the lake can find the shoulder season one of the most rewarding ways to experience Lake Garda.
What matters
These four factors matter more than how extensive the campsite programme is in midsummer.
Low season on Lake Garda does not mean year-round camping. Many campsites open in late March or April and close between early October and early November. Check the exact operating period first, then compare location, pools and accommodation.
In spring and autumn, promenades, towns and excursion destinations are often much calmer than during the summer school holidays. Cycling, walking and sightseeing can benefit from milder temperatures and less parking pressure.
Pools, entertainment, restaurants, shops and boat services may operate on reduced schedules outside peak weeks. An open campsite therefore does not automatically mean that the complete summer programme is available.
Warm days are common in April, May, September and October, but evenings cool down faster and unsettled days are more likely. Heating, a weatherproof living area and suitable clothing make a shoulder-season stay much more comfortable.

That covers not only classic May and September trips but also very early spring and late-autumn dates. For travellers who want maximum flexibility outside the school holidays, this is a substantial advantage.
The Riva del Garda location also suits the season well. The northern shore is particularly attractive for cyclists, hikers and travellers who do not want the whole trip to depend on swimming weather. Camping Brione offers both conventional pitches and mobile homes; Ulivo pitches sit among olive trees and are intended for small to medium tents, while Limone pitches cater for caravans and motorhomes. This creates a useful mix of active Lake Garda travel and a camping base that can still work when the weather is more changeable.
Individual facilities still need checking. The campsite being open does not automatically mean that the pool, dining options or other seasonal services operate at full summer levels on every edge-of-season date. Guests travelling in late March or late October should verify those details separately.

Milder temperatures and fewer crowds change the rhythm of the trip, putting active mornings, calmer towns and cosier evenings first.
Spring on the northern shore
Before the summer heat arrives, the flat lakeside stretch between Riva and Torbole is especially pleasant for an easy ride. There is time to stop for coffee by the water without every break becoming a parking exercise.
Towns without peak-season crowds
In low season, a market visit or old-town walk can often be planned more spontaneously. Cafés, the harbour and the promenade become the focus rather than searching for the final parking space.
Evening at the pitch
When temperatures drop earlier in the evening, the space outside your caravan, motorhome or mobile home becomes especially comfortable. A warm layer, something to eat and a view towards the lake are often enough to end the day well.
Before booking
A few extra checks can make the difference between a relaxed spring or autumn stay and avoidable surprises.
Opening and closing dates change from year to year. Our selection uses the published 2026 seasons; for later trips, verify the current dates with the operator again.
At the very start or end of the season, individual facilities may open later, close earlier or run reduced hours. If a particular service matters, do not rely on the campsite opening date alone.
For motorhomes and caravans, fuel supply and a working heater belong on the checklist. In rental accommodation, check whether your chosen unit can be heated; for tents, sleeping-bag warmth and ground insulation become more important.
Low-season camping works best when cycling, hiking, town visits and food are as important as swimming. That keeps the holiday enjoyable even when one day is cooler or more changeable.

Low season works particularly well for campers who are flexible and do not see Lake Garda purely as a swimming destination. Compare the operating period and the facilities actually available first, then location and price. A campsite that remains genuinely functional in early April or late October can fit far better than a classic summer holiday resort with a larger overall programme.
