Camping on western Lake Garda

Camping region

Camping on western Lake Garda

Green bays, olive groves, smaller towns and plenty of direct lakeside camping: the western shore links the gentle Valtenesi in the south with Salò, Gardone Riviera and the more mountainous stretch towards Toscolano-Maderno.

From the Valtenesi northwards

Why the western shore feels quieter and more varied

Western Lake Garda feels noticeably different from the large holiday centres on the south-eastern shore. Around Manerba del Garda and San Felice del Benaco, olive groves, bays and the gentle Valtenesi hills shape the landscape. Many campsites sit directly beside the water or slightly above it with broad lake views. Salò and Gardone Riviera add promenades, culture and restaurants, while Toscolano-Maderno already has a more mountainous upper-western-shore character.

For campers, this mix is particularly useful. There are large, comfortable camping villages with pools and rental accommodation, traditional lakeside pitch-based campsites and smaller glamping concepts. At the same time, natural sights such as Rocca di Manerba and cultural destinations such as the Vittoriale degli Italiani are close enough for varied day trips.

Our four recommendations represent different western-shore styles. Camping Europa Silvella in San Felice del Benaco is our top pick. It is joined by Weekend Glamping Resort above the Bay of Salò, Camping Baia Verde near Manerba and Camping Toscolano farther north directly on the lake.

Western-shore character

Four reasons to camp on western Lake Garda

The western shore is less dominated by theme parks and more strongly shaped by scenery, bays, towns and a mix of camping, nature and culture.

01

The Valtenesi combines lake and rolling countryside

Between Manerba and San Felice, the shoreline alternates with olive groves, vineyards and low hills. Many campsites therefore feel greener and less densely developed than on busier sections of Lake Garda.

02

Several strong campsites sit directly by the water

Around Manerba, San Felice and Toscolano-Maderno in particular, there are multiple campsites with direct lake access or only a very short distance to the shore. Pools and rental accommodation complement traditional camping.

03

Nature and culture are unusually close together

Rocca di Manerba, Salò, Gardone Riviera and the Vittoriale can be combined from many western-shore campsites without long day drives, which suits travellers with mixed holiday interests.

04

The character changes as you move north

The south is gentler and more strongly shaped by the Valtenesi. From Salò and Toscolano-Maderno northwards, mountains move closer to the lake and the lakeside road increasingly becomes the main link through the region.

Our selection

Why this is our top recommendation

Camping Europa Silvella is our top recommendation for the western shore because it balances traditional camping with a broad holiday-resort offer particularly well. Directly on Lake Garda, it provides pitches alongside mobile homes and glamping accommodation. Three pools, entertainment, sports facilities, a restaurant and pool bar mean that days spent entirely at the campsite still offer plenty of variety.

The San Felice del Benaco location is also strong for exploring the region: Manerba, Salò and Gardone Riviera are within useful reach while the campsite already has direct lake access. This makes Europa Silvella suitable for families, couples and campers looking for a comfortable base on the greener western shore.

Especially suitable for: Families, couples and campers who want direct lake access together with a large, high-comfort camping village on the western shore.

The strongest camping bases are concentrated around Manerba del Garda, San Felice del Benaco and Toscolano-Maderno. Dedicated place pages are built where the local campsite inventory supports a geographically clean selection.

The extensive complex around Gabriele d’Annunzio’s former residence combines buildings, gardens, lake views and unusual collections. It provides a strong contrast to beach, pool and hiking days on the western shore.

Plan well

What to consider when camping on the western shore

The region is long and narrow. Your exact base, the lakeside road and the desired mix of water, towns and excursions matter more than the distance shown on a map.

01

Choose deliberately between the Valtenesi and the upper western shore

Manerba and San Felice work well for a mix of lake access, campsite facilities and short trips to Salò. Toscolano-Maderno is farther north and already feels more mountainous. Travellers planning frequent trips around the whole lake should choose their base accordingly.

02

Do not underestimate driving times on the Gardesana

The western lakeside road is the main north-south connection. In peak season, traffic and town sections can increase journey times considerably, especially on day trips towards the upper lake.

03

Check the exact beach when booking a lakeside campsite

Directly on Lake Garda does not automatically mean a sandy beach or shallow entry. Pebbles, stones, lawns and small bays are common on the western shore, so families and water-sports travellers should check the exact access at the campsite.

04

Treat Salò and Gardone as excursion destinations

Not every attractive western-shore town is also a major camping base. Salò and Gardone Riviera are particularly strong for promenades, dining and culture and work well as day or evening trips from nearby campsites.

Our conclusion

The shore for campers who want lake, scenery and towns together

Western Lake Garda is especially well suited to campers who want more than a large holiday resort and prefer to combine lake access, green scenery and interesting towns. The campsite choice is particularly strong around Manerba and San Felice; farther north, Salò, Gardone and Toscolano-Maderno become increasingly important for excursions, culture and landscape.
