From the Valtenesi northwards
Western Lake Garda feels noticeably different from the large holiday centres on the south-eastern shore. Around Manerba del Garda and San Felice del Benaco, olive groves, bays and the gentle Valtenesi hills shape the landscape. Many campsites sit directly beside the water or slightly above it with broad lake views. Salò and Gardone Riviera add promenades, culture and restaurants, while Toscolano-Maderno already has a more mountainous upper-western-shore character.
For campers, this mix is particularly useful. There are large, comfortable camping villages with pools and rental accommodation, traditional lakeside pitch-based campsites and smaller glamping concepts. At the same time, natural sights such as Rocca di Manerba and cultural destinations such as the Vittoriale degli Italiani are close enough for varied day trips.

Western-shore character
The western shore is less dominated by theme parks and more strongly shaped by scenery, bays, towns and a mix of camping, nature and culture.
Between Manerba and San Felice, the shoreline alternates with olive groves, vineyards and low hills. Many campsites therefore feel greener and less densely developed than on busier sections of Lake Garda.
Around Manerba, San Felice and Toscolano-Maderno in particular, there are multiple campsites with direct lake access or only a very short distance to the shore. Pools and rental accommodation complement traditional camping.
Rocca di Manerba, Salò, Gardone Riviera and the Vittoriale can be combined from many western-shore campsites without long day drives, which suits travellers with mixed holiday interests.
The south is gentler and more strongly shaped by the Valtenesi. From Salò and Toscolano-Maderno northwards, mountains move closer to the lake and the lakeside road increasingly becomes the main link through the region.

Places on the western shore
The strongest camping bases are concentrated around Manerba del Garda, San Felice del Benaco and Toscolano-Maderno. Salò and Gardone Riviera are especially important for excursions, culture and evenings by the lake. Manerba combines unusually rich lakeside nature with a large choice of genuine campsites. The Rocca, long beaches, small harbours and the Valtenesi make it one of the most versatile camping bases on the western shore.

View across the lake
The striking cliff above the water is one of the strongest viewpoints on the south-western shore. The surrounding nature and archaeological area combines short walks with broad views across bays, islands and large parts of Lake Garda.
Evening by the water
Salò sits in a sheltered broad bay and has a long, level promenade directly by the water. The historic centre, cafés and restaurants sit immediately behind it, making it ideal for an easy evening away from the campsite.
Culture among gardens
The extensive complex around Gabriele d’Annunzio’s former residence combines buildings, gardens, lake views and unusual collections. It provides a strong contrast to beach, pool and hiking days on the western shore.
Plan well
The region is long and narrow. Your exact base, the lakeside road and the desired mix of water, towns and excursions matter more than the distance shown on a map.
Manerba and San Felice work well for a mix of lake access, campsite facilities and short trips to Salò. Toscolano-Maderno is farther north and already feels more mountainous. Travellers planning frequent trips around the whole lake should choose their base accordingly.
The western lakeside road is the main north-south connection. In peak season, traffic and town sections can increase journey times considerably, especially on day trips towards the upper lake.
Directly on Lake Garda does not automatically mean a sandy beach or shallow entry. Pebbles, stones, lawns and small bays are common on the western shore, so families and water-sports travellers should check the exact access at the campsite.
Not every attractive western-shore town is also a major camping base. Salò and Gardone Riviera are particularly strong for promenades, dining and culture and work well as day or evening trips from nearby campsites.
Our conclusion
Western Lake Garda is especially well suited to campers who want more than a large holiday resort and prefer to combine lake access, green scenery and interesting towns. The campsite choice is particularly strong around Manerba and San Felice; farther north, Salò, Gardone and Toscolano-Maderno become increasingly important for excursions, culture and landscape.
