Northern Lake Garda: for sports, mountains and quick access to nature
At the northern end, Lake Garda becomes narrower and is framed by high mountains. That landscape change also shapes the camping experience. Riva del Garda is the classic base directly on the lake, Arco sits slightly inland between cliffs and olive groves, and Lake Ledro offers a quieter alternative a short distance west of Lake Garda.
The north is particularly strong when activity is an important part of the holiday. Lake Garda's regular winds make Riva and Torbole well-known areas for sailing and windsurfing, while cycling, hiking and climbing routes begin almost on the doorstep. Travellers who want an active morning and time by the water later in the day will find a very natural combination here.
The north is less suitable if a huge campsite water park, daily theme-park visits or the widest possible choice of large holiday resorts are top priorities. The south and southern eastern shore have a higher concentration of that style of campsite.
Eastern Lake Garda: from quiet olive groves to large holiday resorts
The eastern shore is unusually varied within one region. Around Brenzone, many campsites feel smaller, quieter and more closely connected to olive groves and Monte Baldo. Bardolino combines camping with promenades, restaurants, wine country and easy access. Towards Lazise and Pacengo, the offer becomes larger, more family-oriented and closer to the major theme parks.
This makes the east a good fit for travellers who do not want to define the whole holiday around a single activity. Swimming, lakeside towns, cycling, Monte Baldo, boat trips and family attractions can all be combined depending on where you stay. Road access also varies: the northern and central eastern shore is often approached via the A22 and Affi, while the south-east connects conveniently with Peschiera and the A4.
Our orientation: for a first Lake Garda camping trip with plenty of different options, the eastern and south-eastern shores are particularly flexible. Travellers prioritising quiet should look more towards Brenzone than Lazise.
Southern Lake Garda: strong for families, large resorts and theme parks
In the south, the lake opens out, the landscape becomes gentler and the camping structure changes. Around Peschiera in particular, several large holiday parks combine pools, slides, mobile homes, entertainment and extensive on-site facilities. Sirmione and Moniga add very different local profiles: Sirmione has only a small genuine campsite inventory, while Moniga has a stronger traditional camping presence on the south-western shore.
For families, the south is especially practical when Gardaland, SEA LIFE, CanevaWorld or Movieland are part of the itinerary. From Peschiera and the south-eastern lake, these attractions are much easier to integrate than from the upper western shore. The A4 motorway also simplifies arrival from Milan, Verona and Venice.
The trade-off for that convenience: summer school holidays and holiday weekends are busy. Travellers who want a specific campsite, mobile-home category or lakefront pitch should be particularly cautious about relying on last-minute availability here.
Western Lake Garda: green shores, bays and strong landscape contrasts
The western shore is not one uniform camping region. In the more southerly Valtenesi area around Manerba and San Felice, beaches and nature reserves sit alongside several well-equipped camping and glamping resorts. This area also works well for families who want pools and facilities without staying directly in the main theme-park zone.
Farther north, the shoreline becomes steeper. Places such as Limone sit dramatically between rock and lake but have a much smaller campsite choice. Depending on your starting point, driving the Gardesana Occidentale can also be more winding and slower than reaching the southern lake by motorway. In return, scenery, water, historic towns and boat-based excursions become central to the experience.
The west particularly suits couples, nature-oriented families and campers who prefer to build their holiday around the lake, beaches, walking, smaller towns and excursions rather than theme parks and maximum resort infrastructure.
The quick decision by holiday style
- Windsurfing, sailing, climbing and mountain biking: check northern Lake Garda first.
- Lakeside towns, promenades, excursions and a broad choice: the eastern shore is particularly versatile.
- Family resorts, water parks and Gardaland: Peschiera, Lazise and the southern or south-eastern lake are the most practical bases.
- Nature, bays and a somewhat slower holiday rhythm: look at Manerba, San Felice and other parts of the western shore.
- Traditional camping rather than a large holiday resort: do not choose by shore alone; compare smaller campsites in areas such as Brenzone, Ledro and the west.
The region is therefore the first filter, not the final decision. Two campsites on the same shore can offer completely different holidays. After choosing a region, still compare genuine lakefront access, pitch size, rental accommodation, pools, dog rules and the excursions you actually want to make.
