Camping in Sirmione

Sirmione is not a classic camping town but an exceptional peninsula with a castle, old town, thermal water and Roman ruins. Campsites deliberately sit south of the historic centre around Colombare and Lugana.

Camping before the historic peninsula

Why Sirmione deserves its own page despite the small campsite choice

Sirmione is one of Lake Garda’s best-known destinations but has only a small number of genuine camping properties. We therefore treat this page differently from the other place pages: instead of filling the recommendation block with sites from neighbouring towns, we use one top pick and two local secondary recommendations.

The Garda Village is the largest and most resort-oriented property with a camper area, pools and private beach. Camping Sirmione provides traditional pitches, apartments and bungalows in Colombare. Camping Tiglio lies farther southeast in Lugana and combines a quieter atmosphere with immediate lakeside access.

The historic old town itself is several kilometres farther north. For campers, this separation is practical: the vehicle remains on site while the Scaliger Castle, Grotte di Catullo and thermal attractions are explored by bicycle, bus, boat or on foot.

Why Sirmione

Four reasons to camp in Sirmione

The small campsite choice is balanced by one of the most distinctive town locations anywhere on Lake Garda.

01

The peninsula is the town's defining experience

Sirmione's historic centre extends far out into Lake Garda. The Scaliger Castle, narrow lanes, thermal water and the Grotte di Catullo make it one of the lake's most distinctive destinations.

02

Camping deliberately takes place outside the old town

The campsites are in the southern part of the peninsula around Colombare and Lugana. This is more practical for arrival, pitches and everyday life, while the historic centre is visited by bicycle, bus, boat or on foot.

03

Immediate access to the lake is a major theme at all three properties

The Garda Village, Camping Sirmione and Camping Tiglio all sit directly on or very close to the water, making it easy to combine a Sirmione day with swimming, SUP, pools or a quiet evening by the lake.

04

Sirmione works better for special days than repeated car journeys

The narrow peninsula becomes busy quickly in peak season. Travellers who use bicycles, buses or boats from the campsite generally experience Sirmione more comfortably than those driving to the old-town entrance.

Our selection

1 top pick and 2 secondary picks in Sirmione

Sirmione is a deliberate exception to our usual 1+3 structure: there are only three genuine local camping properties, so no neighbouring-town campsite is added.

The Garda Village directly on Lake Garda in Sirmione with pools and private beach

Sirmione

The Garda Village

Large holiday and camping resort directly on Lake Garda with a camper area, three pools, private beach, sports and family facilities.

  • Directly on Lake Garda
  • Camper area
  • 3 pools
  • Private beach

Why this is our top recommendation

The Garda Village is our top recommendation for Sirmione because it offers the broadest infrastructure of the three local camping properties. Directly on Lake Garda, it combines a camper area with mobile homes and bungalows, three large pools, a private beach, sports facilities, entertainment and dining.

The historic centre lies several kilometres farther north, but this position is practical for campers: the motorhome or car stays on site while the peninsula is visited as a dedicated excursion. Travellers who want to combine Sirmione with a comfortable resort and extensive on-site facilities will find the most complete option here.

Especially suitable for: Families and motorhome campers who want to combine Sirmione with a large lakeside resort and extensive facilities.

Experience Sirmione

Three experiences on the famous peninsula

The strongest experiences lie north of the campsites, which is exactly why an early start or evening visit works especially well.

Early morning at Sirmione's Scaliger Castle with a quiet old town

Before the crowds

Walk through the Scaliger Castle into the old town early

Visitors who reach Sirmione in the morning experience the castle bridge and narrow lanes much more quietly. From there, the walk can continue through the old town towards the northern tip of the peninsula.

Grotte di Catullo and pale rocky shoreline at the northern tip of Sirmione

To the very tip

Walk to the Grotte di Catullo and Jamaica Beach

At the northern end of the peninsula, Roman ruins, olive trees and pale rock shelves meet the lake. The walk reveals a completely different side of Sirmione from the busy historic centre.

Evening thermal and lakeside atmosphere in Sirmione on Lake Garda

Relax in the evening

Combine thermal water with a quiet evening by the lake

Sirmione has been known for its warm thermal water for centuries. A thermal visit combines well with a late walk or a calm evening beside the water back at the campsite.

Plan well

What to consider when camping in Sirmione

Separating the campsite location from the historic old town makes planning much easier here.

01

Do not confuse the old town with the camping location

None of the practical campsites sits directly beside the Scaliger Castle. This is an advantage in everyday terms: Colombare and Lugana work far better for access and camping, while the historic peninsula becomes the excursion.

02

Plan bicycles, buses or boats for the old town

In peak season, road access and parking are heavily used. Leaving the vehicle at the campsite often saves time and makes the journey onto the peninsula more relaxed.

03

Distinguish resort, traditional camping and the quieter option

The Garda Village has the broadest resort infrastructure. Camping Sirmione is more traditional and closer to Colombare, while Camping Tiglio lies farther southeast in Lugana and feels calmer.

04

Experience Sirmione deliberately early or late

The old town is often busiest from late morning through the afternoon. Early morning and evening are noticeably more pleasant around the castle, lanes and waterfront.

Our conclusion

Sirmione is a special destination with a deliberately small camping choice

Travellers who want to compare a large campsite inventory will find stronger options in Peschiera or later Moniga. Sirmione stands out not for quantity but for the combination of direct lake access, historic peninsula and thermal tradition. The page therefore deliberately stays with three local properties instead of artificially expanding the selection.
